What is your gun of choice?

Postby DrKyle1 on Wed Aug 17, 2005 2:03 pm

I am looking at switching from SSP - shooting a glock 35 to CDP. What do ya'll shoot and if you had to do it again would you get the same gun? I was thinking of either a Springfield TRP or a STI Trojan. If you have a pic of your favorite CDP gun show it off!

I have shot CDP with both a Les Baer 1911 and an HK USP. I prefer the Les Baer as I am most familiar with the 1911 system of operation.

I shoot CDP with either a customized Colt Commander or a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special (5"). I have a Springfield 1911 in 38 Super that I'm going to use in ESP.

It's hard to make a recommendation, as price varies greatly. I love my TRS and I shoot it better than any other 1911 I own. However, I'm going to buy a Springfield Loaded Gov’t in 45 ACP to shoot CDP. I'll have Ed Vanden Berg do a competition trigger job (including new hammer and sear) and a match bushing, but that's it. Then I'm going to shoot the snot out of it in practice and matches. In between that time, it'll soak in Ed's Red. This way I don't have to come in from the range on Sunday evening dead tired and have to clean the gun I carry daily.

Regards,
Chas.

DrKyle1,

I shoot a Springfield Black Stainless. It came stock with the magwell and adjustable bomar type Tritium sights. Add a trigger job & you're ready to go. I have others as any 1911 fancier does but this is my favorite.

I usually shoot a Glock 21 in CDP, though I will occasionally shoot a Glock 30, Glock 3036, or a Colt Commander.

I prefer the 21 because it is a widebody for which many after-market goodies are available, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg! Also, there is no stupid grip safety to mess with.

I'm currently shooting a Les Baer PII (5" Government Model) with LB's 1.5" group at 50yards guarantee. It's smooth as silk and 100% reliable. I love it.

I caution you against an STI single stack for one reason. From what I've read and heard, the mag release catch is not made to 1911 specifications. Meaning no one elses magazines (all the good ones are made to government 1911 specifications) will work reliably in it. Look into it for yourself before you buy.

I too only buy 1911's that have a manufacturers warranty of accuracy at a given distance. And therefore all my 45's are more accurate than I am. Then I bought the Black stainless and realized it was better looking than I am as well. :o

Now I shoot a Glock. But I'll get over it.

I just got a Kimber ultra cdp to carry. I like it much better than my stainless pro carry tle/rl that I shoot with, The cdp seems so much smaller and lighter and has a lot more recoil so won't be using it for idpa.. This is my 3rd. Kimber and all have been right on the money right out of the box. I would like to try a STI. And Yeah... It is much better looking than I am too... God speed on your recovery..
I used to be fast, now I am just accurate!

Mostly I shoot a SA that I had custom built as my first IPSC gun in the mid 1980s. I also have a Colt's 70 series that was a Wilson LE comp gun in the 80s as well. I had the comp cut off and the barrel recrowned to turn it into a dandy 5 incher. Both of these guns are incredibly accurate and function 100%.

Plus it it just plain a hoot to get out and compete with these old standby guns again.

If I were to start out fresh in CDP...I'd go to Ed Vandenberg and have him build a 1911 from the ground up. Then you have him standing behind it 100% to work out any kinks.

I have a new favorite. The Smith and Wesson M&P 45 is great. If it weren't for the cost of ammunition, I'd shoot it exclusively.

I alternate between two. An Ed Brown Kobra Carry and a Dan Wesson CBOB. Both are my carry guns so if one is dirty then I have the other one to carry home. Next up will be a Colt XSE Combat Commander with 25LPI checkering on the front strap, an Ed Brown 25LPI checkered Bobtail mainspring housing, an Ed Brown Beavertail grip Safety, and either Novak or Trijicon Tritium sights installed. Also thinking about some sort of black coating on the SS pistol to tone the broght metal down.
